About the Program

Veterans, as well as their family members, are valuable members of our workforce who have in-demand skills that are strengthened and enhanced by their experiences with military service. They are trained to think on their feet and help build more diverse and inclusive work environments. Yet a large portion are unemployed or underemployed, leaving talent pools untapped and military families struggling upon return from service. As one Ambassador recently stated, “it does not matter how many programs there are to assist the military member or their spouse, if the person hiring does not understand the contribution they can make and the experience they will bring.”

With this lunch and learn presentation we hope to help other HR professionals:

• Become familiar with the current trends in military community employment including unemployment rate.
• Understand the barriers and challenges presented to members of the military community when seeking employment opportunities.
• Learn and be able to articulate the business case for hiring candidates from the military community.
• Recognize the challenges that HR professionals report in attracting, hiring, and retaining veterans, as evidenced through research
• Master and be able to apply best practices for overcoming barriers for every aspect of the employee lifecycle

• About Your Presenter

  Trish Grogan has over 19 years of experience in Human Resources. She has worked at Fort Lewis College as a Senior HR Consultant since September 2007. She is certified through the State of Colorado in Job Evaluation and Selection. She earned her SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) in 2019 and her Veterans at Work Certificate in February 2020. She became a SHRM Veteran Ambassador in the Fall of 2021.
